Africa 2017
Africa called to me again, and I answered. As usual she did not disappoint, although I will admit that this year I am a bit torn; one part of me is happy that African safaris are accessible to more people, but the other (somewhat selfish) part of me is sad and dismayed by the increase in number of people and vehicles in my most beloved places (at least during the dry / peak season).
It is difficult to describe, in words, the incredible wildlife encounters I was blessed with again this year. From waking up to a Leopard sleeping at the edge of camp trying to follow her after she ducked out, and thinking we'd lost her in the bush, seeing her take an impala kill (which she also drug through the edge of camp) and again we trying to follow but losing her (leopards = stealth), only to catch up with her again an hour or so later with her cub; to encounters with Elephants, Lions, Wild Dogs, Giraffes, Hippos, enhancing my knowledge and learning field guide skills, to the finale - being in the presence of Mountain Gorillas.
When I first fell in love with wildlife travel, photography was key to me, but in time, my passion has evolved to just being there, in the moment, so this year's photographic work is not my best, but I hope you enjoy Africa through my eyes. Click on an image on the left to open the latest gallery of a few of my favorite stills or check out the video montage, When Africa Calls, that can also be found in the Video Reel section (video is approx. 15 min length and some segments include sound while some do not).
